Podcast and Audio Optimization (SES, New York, 2007)
Amada Wallington, of Searching for Profit, describes the basics needed for an optimized podcast. She described the 4 steps to creating a podcast:
- sound: create an engaging audio program
- web: put it on the web
- rss: create feeds so listeners can find it easily
- submit: let search engines, with podcast indexing, know that you’re there
Make sure that you optimize the file, and title it with memorable names. Meta information can be added using a number of tools, including iTunes. Give the necessary info so people can subscribe to your podcast. Build landing pages which are clear and appropriate to the content. Create feeds based on the content of the podcast. Find listeners via PR, word-of-mouth, marketing communications, links to web sites, and blogs about the podcasts. Make sure you monitor your files and feeds.
Daron Babin, of Webmaster Radio, reinterates, a lot can be done, just with proper equipment. Seek out a condenser microphone (which has a USB connection). They uses Feedburner’s API and recommends Akamai Network Operations as a content delivery network. A very useful thing is to transcribe the entire podcast, so search engines can find the content. Make the content of the landing page and the podcast synomymous and cohesive.
