Dan Wong teaches 3D Design at City Tech at CUNY
Spring 2008- New York City College of Technology, City University of New York
Department of Advertising Design and Graphic Arts
I have the wonderful opportunity of teaching the spring semester of Three Dimensional Design in the Advertising Dept of City Tech in Brooklyn. Thanks to my friend, Ken Conzelmann, who has taught this course for several semesters, I came in as a visiting critic a couple of times to get to know the students and the course in earlier sessions.
I’m very excited about bringing together my background in sculpture and installation, and my experience working professionally as a graphic designer and art director for over a decade to offer some insight into thinking, conceptualizing, and designing with the third dimension in mind.
So far, the students seem to be engaged, although the first class was like pulling teeth to get them to speak up. This past week they opened up a little, and I got to see some of their wacky personalities. Luckily, having visited the same class in earlier sessions, I know that by the end of the semester, they will be talking over one another.
I am planning classes that are very dynamic, interactive, hands-on, and challenging on both a technical and intellectual level. For many of the students, it is the first time working with their hands on three dimensional projects, so there seems to be a combination of eagerness and caution. I intend to break them of any ambivalence early on.
