This session at SES NY went over how to effectively use podcasting in your online strategy. One of the most important factors, from an SEO perspective, is to optimize file name and the text surrounding the link to the podcast. It's also important to embed relevant text (like a transcript) in the file itself.

Amada Wallington, of Searching for Profit, describes the basics needed for an optimized podcast. She described the 4 steps to creating a podcast:

sound: create an engaging audio program

web: put it on the web

rss: create feeds so listeners can find it easily

submit: let search engines, with podcast indexing, know that you're there

Make sure that you optimize the file, and title it with memorable names. Meta information can be added using a number of tools, including iTunes. Give the necessary info so people can subscribe to your podcast. Build landing pages which are clear and appropriate to the content. Create feeds based on the content of the podcast. Find listeners via PR, word-of-mouth, marketing communications, links to web sites, and blogs about the podcasts. Make sure you monitor your files and feeds.

Daron Babin, of Webmaster Radio, reinterates, a lot can be done, just with proper equipment. Seek out a condenser microphone (which has a USB connection). They uses Feedburner's API and recommends Akamai Network Operations as a content delivery network. A very useful thing is to transcribe the entire podcast, so search engines can find the content. Make the content of the landing page and the podcast synomymous and cohesive.

Rick Klau, of Feedburner, knows his stuff.

Once you start, it's a growing addiction.
