3.5.1  Hair Box

When dealing with the concept of "shock," Dan Wong thought immediately of the works of Matthew Barney, Damien Hirst, the Chapman Brothers., and of earlier works by artists including Edward Keinholz, Paul McCarthy, and Chris Burden.

His interests in the sciences made him think of how the human body responds to shock, hairs standing on end, and a shiver down one's spine. He also was reminded of how delicate the human body is, and how it is comprised mostly of water.

Hair Box is 3 hollow fiberglass hairs, weighted down with lead balls, floating in a plexiglass box full of water. Like Jeff Koons' basketballs, physics allows the hairs to "hang", almost as if they are floating in air. A thin sheet of plastic with holes cut out hold the hairs in place and milk added to the water give the cube a translucent, almost solid appearance.
